What does CFC stand for?

The acronym CFC stands for chlorofluorocarbon. Chlorofluorocarbons are a type of organic compound that is made exclusively of chlorine, fluorine and carbon. They are a controversial chemical, as they have useful and detrimental properties.

Chlorofluorocarbons are often used as refrigerants due to their high heat capacities. They are also used as solvents and as aerosol propellants. While useful, studies show that CFCs are known to contribute to ozone depletion, which is a serious environmental issue. To limit the damage of this pollution, CFCs have been phased out by most companies, however, they have mostly been replaced by other chemicals that are still considered pollutants.
