Filipino children are family-oriented and often even a little overly dependent on their mother, family and extended family, according to the Philippine Star. "Sumbong" is a habit among Filipino children to tell on other children to their parents, which is perhaps discouraged among American children. Parents in the Philippines tend not to encourage their children to learn independence until they reach school age.
Older children are often expected to care for their younger siblings, including organizing play. This system, known as "kuya" or "ate," tends to limit the emergence of individuality.
At school, Filipino children become less talkative and playful, according to the Philippine Star. This is because parents discourage expression in front of strangers.
