The chemical formula for calcium silicate is Ca2SiO4. This compound consists of two atoms of calcium, one atom of silicon and four atoms of oxygen. It is created in reactions of calcium oxide and silica.
The compound is also created as a by-product, known as slag, from iron ore being processed in a blast furnace.
Calcium silicate has a variety of applications. It is a safe food additive commonly found in antacids and, due to its water-absorption properties, as an anti-caking compound. In construction, it is commonly used as insulation and a non-carcinogenic alternative to asbestos. It is often used as a fireproofing material in Europe.
