What is the chemical formula of hair dye?

Hair color is made up of two main chemicals: hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. Hydrogen peroxide is mixed with other ingredients based on the desired hue. Ammonia preps the hair to accept the color.

Dating back to the early 1600s, hair dye first originated from plants. Plants were used to color hair naturally.

In 1909, a French chemist created the first commercial hair dye. He started the company, Harmless Hair Dye Company, which today is known as L'Oreal.

There are three levels of hair dying; level one is semi-permanent color, level two is demi-permanent color, and level three is permanent color. If consumers do not want to use chemical hair dyes, they can still use plant-based dyes, such as henna.
