General Motors founder William C. Durant and a Swiss road racer named Louis Chevrolet created Chevrolet Motor Car Company in November 1911 in Detroit, Michigan. The company merged with General Motors on May 2, 1918. Chevrolet is still a division of General Motors, as of 2015.
William C. Durant had been forced to leave General Motors in 1910, but when Durant managed to merge Chevrolet and General Motors in 1918, he regained control of the company. The company was named for the race car driver Chevrolet in an effort to increase sales. The company had early success, but Durant and Chevrolet's differing opinions ultimately resulted in Durant buying Chevrolet out of the company in 1915.
