What is a Chinese guard dog?

There are several breeds of guard dog originating in China and Tibet, including the chow-chow, shar-pei and Tibetan mastiff. Tibetan Buddhist monks also used Tibetan spaniels and Lhasa apsos as watchdogs.

Although Tibetan spaniels and Lhasa apsos are too small to provide protection, historically they would sit on the monastery walls and bark when people approached to alert the monks and the larger Tibetan mastiffs. Chow-chows and shar-peis were both used for a variety of tasks including hunting, herding and guarding property and people. Shar-peis were also used as fighting dogs. Chow-chows in particular have a reputation for being fiercely loyal and protective of their owners.
