What does "Christ" mean?

The literal translation of Christ is "anointed." Christ comes from the Greek word "Christos." Christos is itself a translation of the Hebrew word "mashiach," which means messiah.

According to the Gospels, Jesus was often addressed as "Jesus the son of Joseph," or "Jesus the Nazarene" during his earthly life. In his epistles, St. Paul refers to him as Christ, or Christ Jesus, reflecting the Christian belief that Jesus was the prophesied messiah, and emphasizing the word "Christ" as a title rather than a proper name. One of the earliest Christian symbols is the chi ro which is the first two letters of the Greek word Christos superimposed upon one another.
