Do cicadas have eyes?

A cicada has a total of five eyes, which include two large protruding eyes on both sides of the head and three smaller eyes called ocelli. The ocelli form a triangular shape between the two larger eyes, and their function is to distinguish between light variations.

Both the large and small eyes of the cicada are red, and the two compound eyes allow the insect to see straight ahead and at the side of each eye. Since the ocelli are located on the top of the head and face upward, they help to keep the cicada safe from predators that lurk above.
