Where does the citric acid cycle take place?

The citric acid cycle takes place in the matrix of the mitochondria in cells. It is also known as the Krebs cycle, or the TCA cycle. This process is an essential part of aerobic respiration.
The citric acid cycle is an enzyme-catalyzed metabolic cycle that plays a key role in cellular aerobic respiration. The entire process of cellular aerobic respiration begins with the process of glycolysis and ends with the citric acid cycle. In total, these processes produce more ATP than anaerobic respiration pathways produce. The cell can then utilize the ATP as an energy source to carry out all of its necessary processes.
