The Iditarod dog sled race takes place in Alaska. The race covers 1,000 miles from Anchorage, Alaska, to Nome, Alaska, and includes trails over mountains, through wilderness and across frozen lakes.
Each dog sled team is required to take several items on the sled for the duration of the race. The teams must carry food for both the dogs and driver, an arctic parka and a heavy sleeping bag. Each dog running in the race must also be provided with winter boots to protect their feet from hard-packed snow and ice. The race can take as long as three weeks to complete.
