The scientific name of the great white shark is Carcharodon carcharias, of which it is the only living member in its genus. The great white belongs to the family Lamnidae, or mackerel sharks. Mackerel sharks are characterized by their heavily-built, torpedo-shaped bodies, large teeth and prominent gill openings.
The great white shark is the largest predatory fish in the world, capable of reaching a length of more than 21 feet while weighing 7,000 pounds or more. As an apex predator, the great white has no natural enemies with the exception of the orca. Pinnipeds, fish, seabirds and even cetaceans compose the bulk of the shark's diet.
