What is a clay pot called before it is fired?

Before a clay pot is fired, it is called greenware. Greenware is the word used to refer to any unfired pottery, and it is extremely fragile in this unfired state.

Greenware must be completely dry before being fired in a kiln or using any other method of firing. If the greenware is not completely dry, it can crack and ruin the piece. Depending on the size of the piece and the level of humidity in the area where the piece is fired, it can take up to a week or more to dry completely. It is sometimes suggested that greenware be placed in an oven for a short period of time to ensure that there is no water remaining inside of the clay before it is fired.
