How do you clean marcasite jewelry?

Safely clean your marcasite jewelry by rubbing it with a soft, clean washcloth dipped in warm water. Other helpful supplies include a small bowl, pre-treated jewelry cleaning cloth, a hand towel and a soft drying pad. Cleaning marcasite jewelry usually takes several minutes, plus an hour of drying time.

1. Assemble the supplies

   Fill the bowl with warm water and set it next to the drying pad. Place the hand towel, washcloth and pre-treated jewelry cleaning cloth nearby. Set the jewelry on the drying pad.

2. Rub the jewelry with warm water

   Dip part of the washcloth in warm water and gently rub each piece of jewelry. Use light strokes; do not scrub.

3. Treat serious dirt with a pre-treated jewelry cleaning cloth

   Examine the jewelry for stubborn dirt and grease. Spot-treat these areas with a disposable pre-treated jewelry cleaning cloth. Do not use the cloth on other parts of the jewelry. Discard the cloth after use.

4. Inspect and repair the marcasite

   Repair loose areas of marcasite with small dots of jeweler's epoxy.

5. Rinse and dry the jewelry

   Rinse the jewelry and pat it dry with a hand towel. Set the pieces on the drying pad and leave them there for at least an hour, then put the jewelry back in its box.
