Clean mildew by vacuuming the item, cleaning the surface with a rubbing alcohol solution, placing the item in the sun and spraying it with disinfectant. You need a vacuum, baking soda, a cloth, rubbing alcohol, warm water, a sponge, a fan and disinfectant to complete the process.
- Vacuum the item
Sprinkle baking soda on the item to help neutralize the odor. Let the baking soda sit for a few minutes, then vacuum it off. Immediately empty the vacuum bag to keep the mildew spores from spreading.
- Mix the cleaning solution
In a container, mix 1 cup warm water and 1 cup rubbing alcohol.
- Sponge the item with the mixture
Dip a cloth in the cleaning solution. Sponge the mildewed item with the rag, and thoroughly clean the stained area.
- Remove mildew stains
For tougher stains, mix a few drops of dishwashing liquid into a container of warm water. Scrub the mildew stains with the soapy solution.
- Rinse the item
Dampen a sponge with clean water. Rinse off the item by sponging away both the alcohol and soapy solutions.
- Dry the item
Place the item in the sun to dry it quickly. If this is not an option, turn on a table fan, and point it at the damp item.
- Spray with disinfectant
Spray the item with disinfectant to kill any remaining mildew.
