To clean stains from marble, wash the surface with a mixture of warm water and dish soap. If that does not remove the stain, wash the surface with a mixture of peroxide and ammonia.
Homeowners can remove stains from marble counter tops, table tops and other surfaces using the following steps:
- Make a mixture of water and dish soap
- Clean the surface
- Make a hydrogen peroxide mixture
- Make a peroxide poultice
Choose a gentle dish soap that does not have abrasive properties. Dissolve around 1 tablespoon of soap in a spray bottle filled with warm water. This can help remove oil and other food-based stains.
Spray the dish soap mixture onto the stain. Wipe it away with a soft cloth and dry the surface immediately with a towel.
If dish soap fails to remove the stain, hydrogen peroxide may work. Mix a few drops of ammonia with a 12 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Test the solution on a spot on the underside, corner or edge before applying it to the stain. Use the mixture to gently work at the stain.
Stubborn stains may require some time to remove. To work away deeply set marks, mix some hydrogen peroxide with flour until it has a thick, creamy consistency. Test the poultice on a spot that is not visible before applying it to the table. Apply the mixture to the stain in a thick layer and let it sit for up to 24 hours. Repeat until the stain is gone.
