To clean unsealed grout, mix the ammonia cleaning solution, apply to the grout, scrub, and remove with a wet vacuum. If stains or mold remain, rinse the area and air out the room before applying a bleach solution. Never mix ammonia and bleach, as a poisonous vapor results.
- Mix the cleaning solution
Pour 1/2-cup of baking soda into a spray bottle. Add 1/4-cup of white vinegar and 7 cups of water. Shake vigorously until the ingredients are mixed.
- Apply the solution
Spray the cleaning solution onto the grout. If the grout is heavily soiled, spray heavily and scrub with a stiff brush. Keep scrubbing until the grout is clean.
- Remove the cleaning solution
Use a wet vacuum to suck up the dirty solution. Wipe with a soft cloth to dry.
- Check for cleanliness
Inspect the grout for cleanliness. If the grout is still dirty or showing signs of mold or mildew, rinse off the areas.
- Prepare the room
Allow the grout to dry thoroughly, and air out the room of any ammonia fumes.
- Apply the bleach
Mix one part of liquid chlorine bleach with five parts of warm water. Use a fresh bristle brush to apply the solution to the grout. Scrub with the brush.
- Remove the bleach solution
After scrubbing, allow the bleach solution to sit for five minutes. Rinse the area completely. Do not follow with ammonia at any time.
