How do you clean a washing machine's water inlet valve?

A clogged or damaged water inlet valve can prevent a washing machine from filling up properly. Remove the valve from the machine to clean it properly or replace it if necessary. Tools for removal and cleaning include pliers, a screwdriver, soap and a scrub brush. The time required may range from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

1. Disconnect water and electrics

   As a safety precaution, turn off the electrical and water connections to the device.

2. Expose the valve

   The water inlet valve should be located under the top panel, although location varies by model. Unscrew the panel with a screwdriver to expose the valve.

3. Remove the valve

   Open the panel and use the pliers to remove the to remove the connections. The valve may be connected by clamps and a wire harness. Remove the valve by unscrewing it.

4. Wash the valve in soap

   Submerse the valve in a soap and water mixture. Use a sturdy and pliable scrubber, such as a toothbrush, to loosen the dirt. Scrub both the inside and outside of the valve. After scrubbing, leave the valve to soak in a clean soap and water mixture overnight.

5. Dry the cleaned valve

   After cleaning the valve, remove it from the liquid and dry it with paper towels. Leave it to air dry until completely dry.

6. Replace valve

   Replace the valve by sliding it into place, reattaching connectors and screwing down the top panel.

7. Reconnect water and electricity

   Verify connections before testing.
