CMR in transport stands for “Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road.†This is a United Nations convention that deals with various legal concerns related to cargo transport by road.
The CMR convention was signed on May 19, 1956, in Geneva. All European countries are members of this convention. Other member countries include Iran and Lebanon. The International Road Union developed a standard CMR Waybill that is based on the CMR. This waybill is prepared in three different languages and is required by customs police when a shipment is transported across borders. Additional information is also required in case the shipment contains hazardous substances.
