"CMS" stands for "Content Management System." The term lacks a solid definition and can have various meanings depending on the situation and the individual’s or project's purpose.

A CMS is an application that offers capabilities for multiple users with varying permission rights to manage the content, data or information of a web-based project or Internet application. Content management ranges from creating, archiving, editing, publishing, tracking, reporting and collaborating to distribution of website data and information. A Web application CMS may, for instance, offer such administrative functions as “create," "edit," "publish," "archive web pages” or “add/edit events into an event calendar.”
