A CNA, or Certified Nursing Assistant, state examination is a test given to applicants who wish to earn a CNA certification. The two-part test is composed of a written and clinical skills test.

In most locations, CNA applicants are required to pass each portion of the examination with a score of 70 percent or higher. The written portion of the examination is in multiple-choice format and conducted on a computer. The clinical skills portion is taken before a skills evaluator and is composed of checkpoints that demonstrate and evaluate the skills necessary to follow critical steps relative to personal or patient safety or infection control.
