Is CO2 polar?

By Forinfos - 25/03/2025 - 0 comments

Carbon dioxide, or CO2, is a nonpolar molecule. The molecule has a linear geometry due to the molecular arrangement of the compound. It is arranged with a central carbon molecule and two oxygen atoms surrounding the carbon atom.

Carbon dioxide is a nonpolar compound due to its molecular arrangement. Both oxygen atoms have lone pair electrons that causes a partial negative charge to form on each oxygen atom. The carbon atom has a partial positive charge since it does not have any lone pair electrons. Therefore, carbon dioxide has two partial negative charges and one partial positive charge, making the compound nonpolar because the charges do not cancel out.
