What color is amethyst?

Amethyst is a reddish-purple color, inspired by the crystalline quartz. The quartz received its name from a Greek myth in which Dionysus wept tears of wine that stained the quartz statue of a beautiful maiden.
Amethyst comes from the Greek word "amethystos," meaning "remedy against drunkedness." The amethyst quartz is colorless in its purest form. However, due to absorption and saturation of light, the gem reflects a wide range of reddish-purple, deep purple, bluish-purple and blackish-purple hues. Whether light or dark, the color has a violet hue. Amethyst gem stones are often used in jewelry, such as pendants and earrings.
