What is a Deep Russian amethyst?

Deep Russian amethyst is a rare, high-quality grade of quartz from Russia. It's also known as deep Siberian amethyst. "Deep" refers to the stone's rich purple color.
Amethyst's primary color ranges from pink-purple to deep purple with red or blue secondary hues. Deep Russian amethyst is mostly purple with a slight blue hue. It may have very slight red tones as well.
Deep Russian amethyst is no longer produced because the Russian mines from which it originates have been stripped. The gems’ finite quantity adds to their value.
Synthetic amethyst manufacturers produce stones that are nearly indistinguishable from deep Russian and other high-quality amethyst stones.
