Most species of mistletoe have waxy, white berries. Some of the approximately 1,300 species have red, pink or transparent berries. These berries gain their colors between October and January.
American or Eastern mistletoe has large groups of waxy white berries and broad dark-green evergreen leaves, and it is commonly used as a Christmas decoration in Europe and North America. European mistletoe is similar, with smaller clusters of berries and narrower leaves. Desert mistletoe, which is common throughout the American Southwest, has whitish-red berries that serve as food to many animals and are edible for humans. Most varieties of mistletoe are highly toxic and should not be ingested.
