The Colorado River begins in north central Colorado and ends at the Gulf of California. The river is chiefly supplied by snow melting in the Rocky Mountains and passes through seven U.S. states and part of Mexico.
The major tributaries of the Colorado River are the Gila, San Juan, Green, Virgin, Little Colorado and Gunnison Rivers. These rivers along with the Colorado make up the Colorado River Basin. The Colorado supports habitats for a variety of wildlife from native fish to over 300 bird species.
The Colorado River is the home of the Hoover Dam, which was completed on March 1, 1936. The Hoover Dam is located in Black Canyon and helps control the flow of the Colorado River.
