The Yangtze River starts in the southwestern section of Qinghai and ends north of Shanghai, where it empties into the East China Sea. The river's route is 3,720 miles long, making the Yangtze River the longest river in Asia.
The Yangtze is also the third-longest river in the world, after the Amazon River and the Nile River. Another name for the Yangtze River is the Chiang Jiang River.
Throughout Chinese history, this river has been an important source of water for irrigation transportation and sanitation; over the last century, the Chinese government has also harvested vast amounts of hydroelectric power from its flowing waters. The river flows through regions in which 350 million people live.
