The Hudson River begins at Lake Tear of the Clouds in the Adironack Mountains of upstate New York. It flows to the tip of Manhattan in the southern part of the state.
The Hudson River's course is a total of 315 miles. Approximately 153 miles of the river's flow is an estuary that experiences high and low tides. The river was originally known as Manhatees, a name given to it by Henry Hudson, who sailed it in 1809 in search of the Northwest Passage. The Hudson River did not receive its current name until 1664, when the British took over the region.
