The Hudson River begins at the confluence of Indian Pass Brook near Henderson Lake in New York's Adirondack Park and ends at Upper New York Bay. The Hudson flows southwest past Albany and ultimately forms the boundary between New York and New Jersey near the river's mouth.
The Hudson River is 315 miles long and has an average elevation of 4,590 feet above sea level. The Hudson's basin comprises a total area of 14,000 square miles. The river is named after Henry Hudson, an English sailor for the Dutch East India Company, who explored the waterway in 1609. The Hudson is sometimes called "America's Rhine" for its similarity to the European river.
