The Congo River begins where the Lualaba and Luvua Rivers meet in the Altai Mountains and ends at the Atlantic Ocean. It is 2,914 miles long and the world's eighth-longest river.
The Congo River is home to more than 200 species of fish, and its banks provide nourishment for animals like giraffes, antelope, zebras and buffalo. The area around the river is hot and humid, and people use the river for transportation. Because the Congo River is the border between the Republic of Congo and Zaire, it is a source of water for farmers who grow things like cotton and tobacco. It is a 1/2 mile wide at its most narrow point and at its widest, it spans a width of around 10 miles.
