Common animals in Europe include beavers, gray wolves, roe deer, European starlings and rock pigeons. Many of these animals have similar counterparts in North America that are either native or introduced. Marine animals, such as monk seals, walruses and several species of whales live on or near Europe's coast.
Other European animals that are similar to North American animals include hares, badgers, polar bears, arctic foxes and mallard ducks. Europe is also home to animals that are different from those in North America, such as the saiga, raccoon dog and marbled polecat. The continent has one kind of native monkey, the Barbara macaque, on the island of Gibraltar.
