People typically use a health FSA to pay for medical expenses that are not covered by insurance, which include deductibles and copayments paid to a health insurance company, prescription drug expenses and expenses for medical supplies. Expenses for eyeglasses, eye exams and preventive dental care are also FSA eligible.
Other common FSA-eligible expenses include costs for transportation to and from medical appointments, fees for psychiatric or psychological care, fees paid to a chiropractor and costs for a child's special education. Over-the-counter medicines are FSA eligible with a doctor's prescription. Gym membership fees are FSA eligible only if a doctor writes a letter of medical necessity.
