Symptoms of MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, generally appear as boils, abscesses or resemble a surgical wound, notes WebMD. The vicinity of the condition resembles a skin infection and is characterized by swelling, redness, pain and pus-filled bumps.
MRSA is an infection that is caused by an antibiotic-resistant strain of staph bacteria, notes Mayo Clinic. In rare circumstances, it can lead to necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-eating bacterial infection. Although MRSA tends to occur in people who have been in hospitals or health care settings where medical procedures are performed, it may occur among healthy people in the general community and is spread through skin-to-skin contact.
