Where are some common places to locate a boat's serial number?

A boat's Hull Identification Number is found in the upper right corner of the transom, or stern. If a boat does not have a transom, or placement of the HIN on the transom is impractical, the HIN is located on the starboard outboard side of the hull.
The U.S Coast Guard requires all boats manufactured after 1972 to have a HIN. Boats manufactured before 1973 may not have a HIN. Boats imported or manufactured after August 1, 1984, also have a secondary Hull Identification Number located in an unexposed area of the boat, such as beneath an item of hardware or a fitting. The secondary HIN assists authorities with identification of the boat if it is stolen, or if the primary HIN is damaged or removed.
