Topical corticosteroid medication is a common treatment for hand dermatitis, says the National Eczema Association. Corticosteroid medication is available by prescription, and individuals should use it to alleviate discomfort only during flare-ups. Some people with hand dermatitis use noncorticosteroid topical medication to avoid the side effects of corticosteroid medication.

Barrier repair moisturizers also treat hand dermatitis, says WebMD. These types of moisturizers lock moisture into skin and repair damage. People with hand dermatitis should wash their hands only when necessary, use mild soap and wear cotton gloves as needed to prevent flare-ups. Applying petroleum-based ointment to the hands and covering them with gloves for a half hour twice a day helps heal dry, cracked hands.
