The most common varieties of azaleas in the United States include George Lindley Taber, Coral Bells, Gumpo Pink and Mrs. G. G. Gerbing. George Lindley Taber, or Tabor in some reckonings, is a Southern Indian azalea with large pink flowers and large leaves.

Mrs. G.G. Gerbing is also a Southern Indian azalea whose flowers are purest white. Coral Bells is a Kurume azalea, which means it is more tolerant of cold than most other types of azaleas. Its blooms appear in very early spring. They are small and bright pink and cover the entire shrub.

Gumpo Pink is a Satsuki azalea. It is a low-growing shrub that is prized for its large, showy pink blossoms. There is also a Gumpo White variety of this azalea.
