What is comprehensive insurance?

Comprehensive insurance is a type of automobile insurance that is separate from collision coverage. It is designed to cover a vehicle in the event of damages that are not directly related to a collision accident.
Examples of damages that may be covered by comprehensive insurance include automobile theft, vandalism and damages that occur as a result of weather elements, such as flooding or hail storms. Damage caused by fire or animals can also be covered under comprehensive insurance.
Each state has different regulations regarding the purchase of insurance, with some states not requiring comprehensive coverage at all. Some consumers may also choose not to purchase comprehensive coverage due to the low value of their vehicles.
