What is computer internal memory?

Computer internal memory generally refers to chips within a computer that house the random access memory (RAM) or read-only memory (ROM). Generally, internal memory refers to RAM.

Internal memory is often confused with storage in a computer. Storage refers to the location documents and programs that are stored on a computer. Storage is akin to long-term memory within the brain, and items in storage are still there once the computer has been shut down. Memory is more akin to short-term memory in the brain and is gone when the computer is switched off. It is where information is accessed in order to manipulate the documents and programs saved in the storage.
