What are concrete splash blocks?

Concrete splash blocks, also referred to as downspout splash guards, are used to control the flow of rainwater moving down a spout from a gutter off a roof. These formed blocks typically feature a grooved channel down the center that runs at a decline to one end of the block.
Without a concrete splash block, rainwater coming from a gutter system can erode the ground immediately under the downspout. The splash guard distributes the water away from the downspout and building foundation, preventing weakening or flooding. They are typically made of concrete because of its durability, but plastic, rubber and ceramic blocks are also manufactured.
