A concussion test is a neurological and cognitive exam conducted by a physician to determine if a patient has a concussion, according to Mayo Clinic. The neurological portion of the exam tests the patient's vision, hearing and coordination. The cognitive portion of the test covers memory and concentration.
If the neurological and cognitive tests show possible injury, the physician may order imaging, such as a cranial computerized tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, to look for trauma or bleeding in the brain, states Mayo Clinic. If a concussion is diagnosed, hospitalization or 24-hour at-home observation may be required. Symptoms of a concussion include a severe headache, vomiting and seizures.
