The Conowingo Dam is a large hydroelectric dam located along the Susquehanna River near Conowingo, Md., 45 miles northeast of Baltimore. The dam is about 10 miles from the river's mouth at the Chesapeake Bay and 5 miles from the Pennsylvania border.
The Conowingo Dam has a total surface area of 9,000 acres, with a capacity of 310,000 acre-feet of water. The dam spans a length over 4,600 feet, reaching a maximum depth of 105 feet. It is one of the biggest non-federal hydroelectric dams in the United States. The Conowingo Dam was under construction from 1926 to 1928, officially opening in 1929. The power station consists of 11 turbines and has a capacity of 572 megawatts.
