If a Social Security payment is late or missing, individuals may call the Social Security local office, states the Social Security Disability and SSI Resource Center. Another option is to call the toll-free phone number, which is 1-800-772-1213, as of 2015.
Since March 2013, the U.S Treasury Department has used electronic payments for all Social Security payments, and the change was initially introduced in order to reduce government spending CNN Money reports. Check recipients gradually made the change to electronic deposits, with the transition beginning in May 2011. All new recipients of benefits are required to set up a direct deposit account where the benefit money is transferred.
