On what continent is Nigeria located?

Nigeria is part of the African continent. It sits in the southwestern region and borders the Republic of Benin, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

Although Nigeria became independent of British rule in 1960, it remained under military rule until 1999, when the first civilian elected the governmentd. The country is part of West Africa, and is considered to be part of the tropics. Its southern border is the Gulf of Guinea, and it touches the Lake of Chad to the northeast.

The country is one of the most populated African countries. As of 2014, Nigeria has the strongest economy on the continent; its gross domestic product overtook South Africa.
