Coreg is an alpha and beta blocker used for the treatment of high blood pressure and heart failure, according to WebMD. It may also be prescribed to a patient following a heart attack to help the heart pump more efficiently.
Coreg blocks the action of epinephrine in the body and has the effect of allowing the heart to beat more slowly and less forcefully, so blood pressure is reduced and the heart is less strained. WebMD notes that when Coreg is used for the treatment of hypertension, it can take a couple of weeks for the patient to feel the full effects of the drug.
Coreg's generic form is carvedilol, and the drug is also available in an extended-release version called Coreg CR.
