Vicks Children's NyQuil and Children's Triaminic are two over-the-counter, brand-name cough syrups that are suitable for children over the age of 6, according to each company's website. Children under the age of 4 should not take cough syrup, WebMD and BabyCenter report.
As of 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration continue to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of cough and cold medicines for children ages 2 to 5, notes WebMD. A 2007 study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine found that buckwheat honey can be an effective cough suppressant for children over the age of 2, explains ABC News.
