Diabetics count carbohydrates by adding the total number of carbs in the food and drink they consume. A recommended starting point is 45 to 60 grams of carbs per meal, according to the American Diabetes Association. This number might increase or decrease depending on blood glucose levels.
Carbs are in foods such as grains, bread, pasta, potatoes, beans and dairy, notes the American Diabetes Association. They are also in fruit, juice, milk, soft drinks, chips and candy. One small piece of fruit has 15 grams of carbs. One slice of bread and 1/3 cup of cooked pasta each have 15 grams of carbs.
