Bermuda, one of the 14 British Overseas Territories, belongs to the United Kingdom. Bermuda is a self-governing territory, with the British monarch as its titular head of state, and the leader of the party with a parliamentary majority as its head of government.
The British monarch appoints and is represented in Bermuda by a governor. Bermuda has a bicameral parliament consisting of the Senate, with 11 appointed members, and the House of Assembly of 36 elected members. The governor usually names as premier the leader of the party or coalition with a majority in the Assembly. In 1995, Bermudians voted decisively against a referendum on independence from the United Kingdom.
