Shell Oil began in England in the 1800s under the name Shell Transport and Trading Company. It merged with the Dutch company Royal Dutch Petroleum in the early 1900s to form Royal Dutch Shell, and the headquarters moved to the Netherlands. The parent company now holds many subsidiary companies, including Shell Oil in the United States.
