Chevron Corporation is an American multinational corporation publicly held by its shareholders. As of 2014, Chevron stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange with the symbol CVX.
The company was founded in 1879 when a group of explorers and merchants established Pacific Coast Oil Company in San Francisco, Calif. After World War I, with known U.S. oil reserves depleted, the company began attempting to find oil in international locations. Success came in 1932 with the discovery of oil in the island nation of Bahrain. During World War II, the company became a key supplier to the Allies in the Pacific.
