Boston is located in Suffolk County. Suffolk County was founded on May 10, 1643 and is named after the Suffolk County in England. As of 2014, Boston is both the largest city in the county and the county seat.
The cities in Suffolk County upon its establishment were Boston, Roxbury, Dorchester, Dedham, Braintree, Weymouth, Hingham and Hull. Suffolk County split in 1793, and the area to its south became Norfolk County. Suffolk County has a land area of 120 square miles, with 58 square miles of land and 62 square miles of water, making it the smallest county in Massachusetts. Its communities are Boston, Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop.
