Austin, Texas, is located in Travis County. The city of Austin became the capital of Republic of Texas in 1839. It was named after Stephen F. Austin, who is known as the "Father of Texas."
Native Americans originally lived in the area. In 1835, European settlers arrived and created a settlement, which became known as the Village of Waterloo in 1837. When Texas became a republic, it purchased 640 acres on the Colorado River, which included Waterloo. In the 1840s the capital of Texas was moved to Houston. After Texas was annexed into the United States, Austin became the official capital in 1846.
